NOTICE – Bill Delay
The tax rates for the 2012/2013 real property tax, special benefit district, and personal property tax bills were adopted by the City Council on June 25, 2012. As a result, there was insufficient time for the Finance Department to finalize the preparation of the bills for mailing on July 1st. The City was not able to begin the process of preparing the tax bills until approval of the tax rate by the City Council. Following adoption of the tax rate, in accordance with State law, the City must certify to the Maryland State Department of Assessment and Taxation (SDAT) the adopted tax rates. The SDAT then prepares tax assessment data files to send to the City. This process takes five to seven business days. The SDAT was notified the evening of June 25, immediately following adoption of the tax rate.
Currently, we anticipate that the first bills will be mailed no later than July 3rd. Further, in accord with City Council Ordinance 10-339, the discount period for early payment of tax bills cannot be extended beyond July 31, 2012.
